Rodrigo Paz wins Bolivia Presidency amid severe economic crisis

Centrist economist Rodrigo Paz has been elected President of Bolivia, defeating conservative rival Jorge Quiroga in a runoff vote. This victory signals a decisive political shift, ending nearly two decades of leftist rule led by the MAS party. Paz now faces the immense challenge of steering the country through its most severe economic turmoil in forty years.
Rodrigo Paz of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC) has been elected as Bolivia's new president after a decisive victory in Sunday's runoff election. Official results from the Supreme Electoral Tribunal confirmed Paz defeated former President Jorge Quiroga, marking a pivotal political transition for the South American nation as it grapples with a profound economic crisis.
A Conclusive Victory and a New Era
With nearly all ballots counted, the electoral authority confirmed Paz secured a clear majority. His opponent, Jorge "Tuto" Quiroga, publicly conceded defeat, stating, “We cannot leave the country in limbo... I have congratulated Rodrigo.” This election concludes almost twenty years of political dominance by the leftist Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) party, establishing a new political direction for the Andean country.
A Daunting Economic Landscape
President-elect Paz is set to inherit a nation confronting its most severe economic challenges in four decades. Bolivia is experiencing a critical shortage of US dollars, leading to restricted imports and soaring inflation that reached 25% last month. The dwindling foreign reserves, exacerbated by falling natural gas production, have also triggered widespread fuel shortages across major urban centers.
High Stakes and a High Turnout
The significant challenges awaiting the new government were reflected in the substantial voter participation. Preliminary reports from the electoral body indicated a high turnout, estimated between 85% and 89%, underscoring the population's engagement in determining the country's future path. Paz, who is the son of former President Jaime Paz Zamora, is scheduled to assume office on November 8.
