The Defense Ministry activated air defense systems and issued a warning via RO-ALERT after radar identified an unmanned aircraft moving toward Tulcea County, though it did not enter Romanian territory.

Romania's Defense Ministry announced Friday that its radar systems detected a drone operating in Ukrainian airspace near the country's eastern border, prompting an immediate security response. The aircraft was identified at 6:57 a.m. local time moving toward the northern part of Tulcea County, which shares a border with Ukraine.

Security Response

Air defense systems were placed on alert following the detection, and authorities issued a warning message to residents in the targeted area through the RO-ALERT emergency notification system at 7:17 a.m. The ministry confirmed the drone did not enter Romanian national airspace, and the alert was lifted at 7:47 a.m. The statement emphasized that no breach of Romania's territorial integrity was recorded.

Regional Pattern

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, several European countries bordering Ukraine have reported drone-related incidents near or inside their airspace. Romania, Poland, and Moldova have at various times detected unmanned aerial vehicles or debris believed to be linked to the conflict. Friday's incident adds to a growing pattern of aerial activity along NATO's eastern flank, though this particular event appears to have remained contained within Ukrainian territory.

Ongoing Vigilance

Romanian authorities maintain heightened vigilance along the border with Ukraine, regularly monitoring airspace for potential incursions or debris falls. The rapid activation of warning systems reflects NATO members' sensitivity to any potential spillover from the conflict, even as this incident concluded without violation of Romanian sovereignty. The military continues to monitor the situation as cross-border tensions remain elevated.
