Rubio says $400M Ukraine aid package announcement expected soon

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a Senate committee on Wednesday that Washington is finalizing a $400 million military aid package for Ukraine, adding that an official announcement is expected shortly once the proposal clears interagency review.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told a Senate committee on Wednesday that Washington is finalizing a $400 million military aid package for Ukraine, stating that an official announcement is expected shortly once the proposal completes interagency review. "That's going through the interagency process right now," Rubio said, adding that he expects "news on that pretty soon."
The funding, authorized under the 2026 Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, allows the Pentagon to procure equipment and ammunition directly from US defense contractors. Although Congress approved the assistance in December, its release faced procedural delays that have drawn scrutiny from lawmakers monitoring the pace of support for Kyiv.
Regional commitments and munitions concerns
Rubio's remarks follow his previous assertions that American support for Ukraine remains "unimpeded" by the ongoing regional conflict with Iran. Members of Congress and press reports have indicated that US stocks of certain munitions are running low due to the demands of the Iran war, raising questions about Washington's capacity to arm allies across multiple theaters simultaneously.

Legislative authorization
The roughly $900 billion National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 allocated $400 million for Ukraine in 2026 and an additional $400 million in 2027 under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. The funding structure enables direct procurement from industry rather than drawing down existing military inventories, a mechanism designed to sustain longer-term assistance while preserving readiness for other contingencies.
