Rubio says Russia-Ukraine peace prospects 'don't look great'

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers on Wednesday that prospects for ending the Russia-Ukraine war remain bleak, saying Moscow and Kyiv remain unwilling to make the concessions necessary for a diplomatic breakthrough despite Washington's stated readiness to assist in bringing the devastating conflict to a close.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that the outlook for ending the Russia-Ukraine war remains bleak, telling the House Foreign Affairs Committee that neither Moscow nor Kyiv appears prepared to make the concessions necessary for a peace agreement.
Stalemate continues
Rubio expressed frustration that Russia, in particular, has been unwilling to make concessions to end the fighting. He emphasized that the war has "no military solution" and must be resolved through diplomacy, noting that the conflict has dragged on with both sides refusing to compromise on key demands.
US role and weapons sales
Despite Washington's stated desire to end the war, Rubio acknowledged that the US is not an "impartial mediator" as it continues to sell weapons to Ukraine. He stressed that American support for Kyiv remains "unimpeded" by the war in the Middle East, signaling no reduction in military assistance.

Rubio said the administration remains ready to assist in bringing the conflict to a close. "I don't have any news for you on that front today, but... we're ready to step in and play whatever positive role we can to bring that devastating and escalating war to an end," he told lawmakers.
