Rubio to meet Danish officials as US weighs Greenland options

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed a meeting with Danish officials next week amid tensions over US interest in acquiring Greenland. The White House stated all options, including military measures, are being considered for the foreign policy goal.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he will meet with Danish officials next week, following a request for talks from Copenhagen after renewed statements from President Donald Trump about acquiring Greenland. The diplomatic meeting comes as the White House confirms it is evaluating various options, including potential military measures, to pursue control of the autonomous Danish territory.
Diplomatic Talks Amid Rising Tensions
When questioned by reporters on Capitol Hill about the possibility of military intervention, Rubio deferred detailed discussion. "I'm not here to talk about Denmark or military intervention. I'll be meeting with them next week. We'll have those conversations with them then," he stated. He noted that Trump's focus on Greenland "is not new," referencing the president's earlier term and historical US administrative interest in the territory.
White House Confirms Military Option on Table
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt formally acknowledged the administration's stance, stating, "The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal." This follows President Trump's recent declaration that "We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security," arguing Denmark is incapable of managing it.
Rejection and Global Context
Greenland, which is self-governing within the Kingdom of Denmark, has consistently rejected any notion of a sovereignty transfer. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has publicly urged Trump to cease the threats. The situation emerges shortly after a US military operation in Venezuela, highlighting an assertive and unilateral US foreign policy approach that contrasts with the diplomatic models favored by other global powers, including Türkiye, which emphasizes sovereignty and dialogue.
