Turkish FM says lasting peace in Ukraine war 'quite close'

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stated that a lasting peace in the Russia-Ukraine war is "quite close," with key issues being seriously discussed. He emphasized Türkiye's readiness to lead a naval security component in the Black Sea and contribute to Ukraine's post-war recovery.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed optimism that a lasting peace agreement to end the Russia-Ukraine war is within reach. Speaking after a Coalition of the Willing summit in Paris, Fidan stated, "After four years of war, we are now quite close to a lasting peace," noting that critical issues are being discussed with exceptional seriousness.
Türkiye’s Role in Security and Reconstruction
Fidan highlighted Türkiye's anticipated role in post-war security, stating that under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's instructions, the Turkish Armed Forces are prepared to assume responsibility for a naval component in the Black Sea. "Considering that Türkiye is a NATO member with the largest fleet in the Black Sea, it is only natural for Türkiye to assume responsibility for Black Sea security," he said. He also emphasized Türkiye's capacity to lead in Ukraine's economic recovery, citing the expertise of Turkish businesses in infrastructure and investment.
Criticism of Regional Actions by Israel
The foreign minister also addressed regional tensions, condemning Israeli military incursions into Syria as "provocative" and an extension of expansionist policies that threaten regional stability. Regarding Israel's recent recognition of Somaliland, Fidan labeled it a destabilizing move, asserting that "‘divide, fragment, and swallow or rule’ style policies in our region are now a thing of the past." He reaffirmed Türkiye's commitment to Somalia's territorial integrity and noted a Turkish diplomat is mediating between Somaliland and the Somali government.
