Russia condemns foreign interference in Iran, vows closer ties

People gather at Enghelab Square after a government call to rally against recent protests across the country, chanting anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans, in Tehran, Iran, on January 12, 2026.

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu criticized external meddling in Iran's internal affairs during a call with his Iranian counterpart. He reaffirmed Moscow's commitment to deepen bilateral cooperation under a recently signed strategic partnership treaty.

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu condemned what he termed foreign interference in Iran's domestic affairs during a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Larijani, on Monday. According to a readout from Moscow, Shoigu "resolutely condemned another attempt by external forces to interfere in the internal affairs of Iran."

Condolences and Commitment to Partnership

In the discussion, Shoigu also extended condolences to Larijani over the "numerous victims" resulting from recent events inside the country, a likely reference to the ongoing unrest and protests. The Russian official further expressed Moscow's readiness to continue developing bilateral relations based on the Treaty of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed by the two nations on January 17, 2025.

Continuation of Strategic Coordination

Both security chiefs agreed to maintain contacts to align their positions on shared security concerns, underscoring the ongoing coordination between Moscow and Tehran. The strategic partnership pact, signed earlier this year, formalizes the deepening military and economic alliance between Russia and Iran, a relationship that has drawn consistent criticism from Western capitals.

The Western Perspective

Nations in Europe and North America have frequently scrutinized the defense and policy alignment between Russia and the Islamic Republic, viewing it as a challenge to regional stability and international security frameworks. This latest high-level exchange signals a continued strengthening of the Russo-Iranian axis amidst ongoing global tensions.
