Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry announced Thursday it has dispatched 13 tons of humanitarian aid, consisting of medicines, to Iran via Azerbaijan. The shipment, ordered by President Vladimir Putin, will be transferred to Iranian authorities after delivery to Azerbaijan amid ongoing US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Russia has delivered 13 tons of humanitarian assistance to Iran, sending a shipment of medicines through neighboring Azerbaijan, the country's Emergency Situations Ministry announced Thursday. The aid delivery, carried out on the direct orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, represents Moscow's tangible support for Tehran as it continues to face US-Israeli military strikes.

Medicines transferred through Azerbaijan

The ministry stated that its aviation unit organized the delivery of medical supplies to the Republic of Azerbaijan, where they will be subsequently transferred to authorized representatives of the Iranian government. The route through Azerbaijan provides a secure overland corridor for the aid to reach Iran, avoiding the conflict zones and contested waters that have become increasingly dangerous amid the expanding regional war.

Strategic partnership deepens amid conflict

The humanitarian shipment underscores the deepening strategic relationship between Moscow and Tehran, which have drawn closer together since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and now face parallel confrontations with Western powers. Russia has previously provided diplomatic support to Iran at the UN and elsewhere, and this direct material assistance signals Moscow's willingness to offer concrete aid as Tehran endures a devastating military campaign that has killed more than 1,300 people, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran continues retaliation

Iran has responded to the US-Israeli offensive, launched Feb. 28, with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting American military assets. As the conflict enters its third week with no end in sight, international actors are increasingly taking sides, with Russia's aid delivery representing a clear show of support for Tehran amid the escalating confrontation that threatens to draw in additional regional and global powers.
