Russia Ukraine missile strikes kill civilians as war escalates

Russia and Ukraine exchanged long-range missile and drone strikes across multiple regions, leaving civilians dead and injured on both sides. Officials in Kyiv and Moscow reported rising casualties as air defence systems intercepted dozens of incoming drones, while infrastructure and residential areas were hit in renewed overnight attacks.
Russia Ukraine missile strikes intensified overnight as both countries carried out long-range attacks far beyond the front lines, causing civilian casualties in multiple regions and further escalating the ongoing conflict.
Rising civilian toll in Ukraine and Russia
Ukrainian authorities initially reported that 13 people were killed during Russian overnight strikes, while Russian officials said four civilians died in drone attacks carried out by Ukraine. Later updates from Ukraine’s State Emergency Service increased the Kyiv death toll to 17, as search and rescue operations continued in affected areas.
In Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, Governor Gleb Nikitin said drone debris struck industrial and residential zones, killing one person and injuring four others. He added that air defence systems intercepted around 30 drones during the attack.
Strikes across Russian border regions
Further casualties were reported in the Belgorod region, where a man was killed and his wife wounded after a drone hit a private residence. In the Russian-controlled part of Zaporizhzhia, local authorities said two employees of an energy company were killed while carrying out repair work following a strike.
Military targets and infrastructure damage claims
Russia’s Defence Ministry stated that it used long-range precision weapons, drones, and multi-domain strike systems to hit military-linked infrastructure in Kyiv and surrounding areas, including fuel and energy facilities and defence industry sites. It also claimed attacks on airfield infrastructure across several Ukrainian regions including Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv.
Moscow said one of the targeted facilities was an electronics producer allegedly linked to missile and air defence systems, while describing the strikes as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure.
The Kremlin, through spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, said Russian forces were only targeting military or defence-related assets and reported that President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the operation.
Ukraine’s counterclaims and broader escalation
Ukraine’s military said it struck an oil refinery in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, a drone storage facility in occupied Zaporizhzhia, a railway bridge near Stanytsia Luhanska, and a Russian command post in Kharkiv region.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 74 missiles and nearly 500 drones overnight, with Kyiv as the primary target. It said multiple missiles and drones reached 33 locations, while debris fell in additional areas.
Independent verification of battlefield claims remains difficult due to the ongoing war conditions and restricted access to affected zones.
