Russian, UAE presidents discuss Middle East and Iran crises

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin and UAE leader Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan agreed on the need for diplomatic solutions to Middle East crises during a Saturday phone call, as regional tensions remain high following two months of war between the US, Israel and Iran.
Diplomatic engagement
Russian President Vladimir Putin and United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and Iran during a phone call on Saturday, emphasizing the importance of political solutions to regional conflicts, according to a Kremlin statement.
Bilateral ties
The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the development of trade and economic cooperation between Moscow and Abu Dhabi. They agreed to maintain active bilateral contacts going forward, the Kremlin noted. Putin also thanked the UAE for its regular assistance in resolving humanitarian issues related to the conflict in Ukraine, according to the statement.
Regional tensions
Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting Tehran to retaliate against Israeli and Gulf targets and block the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, though subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.
