Russia's Lavrov backs US-Iran talks in call with Tehran

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov voiced support for the upcoming US-Iran peace negotiations during a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. Moscow welcomed the two-week ceasefire and reaffirmed readiness to help achieve long-term stability in the Middle East.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed hope for the success of US-Iran peace talks during a telephone conversation Thursday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. Moscow welcomed the two-week cessation of hostilities between Washington and Tehran, as well as Israel’s adherence to the agreement, and believes the Pakistani‑brokered deal has a regional dimension that applies notably to Lebanon.
Moscow’s Role and Iran’s Position
Lavrov reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to assist in overcoming the consequences of what it termed unprovoked US‑Israeli aggression against Iran and to help secure lasting peace and sustainable security in the region. For his part, Araghchi thanked Russia for its principled stance at the UN Security Council during discussions on the Gulf situation. He stressed Iran’s responsible approach in accepting the ceasefire and underlined that Washington bears full responsibility for fulfilling its commitments, including halting the war on all fronts, especially in Lebanon.
Strait of Hormuz and Israeli Strikes
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi said safe navigation would be ensured under specific guidelines, in coordination with Iranian armed forces, through designated routes and existing technical measures, provided the US adheres to its obligations. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova strongly condemned the Israeli attack on Lebanon carried out on April 8, warning that such actions jeopardise the emerging negotiation process and increase the risk of renewed large‑scale armed confrontation in the Middle East.

Türkiye’s Perspective
Türkiye, which has consistently advocated for de‑escalation and diplomatic solutions, views the Russian‑Iranian coordination as a positive contribution to regional stability. Ankara continues to support all initiatives that reduce tensions and protect civilian populations, while warning against any attempts to sabotage the fragile ceasefire. The upcoming direct talks in Islamabad are seen as a critical test for achieving a durable peace.
