Saudi Arabia strongly condemned Tuesday an Iranian drone attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh, calling it a "flagrant violation" of international norms and laws. Riyadh warned Tehran that such actions will drive the region toward further escalation and reserved the right to respond to the aggression.

Saudi Arabia issued a forceful condemnation Tuesday following an Iranian drone attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh, describing the strike as a "flagrant violation" of international norms and diplomatic protections. The Saudi Foreign Ministry statement warned that such actions risk further destabilizing an already volatile region and signaled that Riyadh may consider a response.

Riyadh cites international law violations

The attack "flagrantly violates all international norms and laws, including the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which grant immunity to diplomatic premises and personnel even in situations of armed conflict," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in its statement. The ministry emphasized that diplomatic compounds enjoy protected status under international law regardless of broader hostilities, making the targeting of the US Embassy particularly egregious.

Saudi warning to Tehran

"The continuation of this blatant Iranian behavior, despite Iran being aware that Saudi authorities have affirmed they will not allow the use of Saudi airspace or territory to target Iran, will drive the region toward further escalation," the ministry warned. Riyadh emphasized that it reserves the right to take any necessary actions to safeguard its security, protect its territory, citizens, residents and critical interests, "including the option to respond to the aggression." The statement represents a significant hardening of Saudi rhetoric toward Iran amid the expanding regional conflict.

Embassy targeted, operations suspended

According to the Saudi Defense Ministry, the drone attack on the US Embassy in the Saudi capital caused a limited fire and minor material damage but resulted in no casualties. The US Embassy announced Tuesday it would remain closed following the attack, canceling all routine and emergency American Citizen Services appointments as security assessments continue.

Regional conflict expands

Tuesday's attack on the Riyadh embassy marks a significant escalation in Iran's retaliatory campaign against US assets across the Gulf region. Since Saturday's US-Israeli strikes killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and dozens of senior Iranian commanders, Tehran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and multiple Gulf countries hosting American military facilities. The targeting of a diplomatic mission raises the stakes considerably, potentially drawing Gulf states more directly into the conflict as they confront Iranian attacks on their soil.
