Settlers expand illegal West Bank outpost, annexing Palestinian land

Israeli settler groups have expanded an illegal outpost near Nablus by adding prefabricated homes, a move rights groups say aims to annex Palestinian territory. The expansion follows a pattern of intensified settlement activity and land seizure.
Israeli settler groups have expanded an illegal settlement outpost in the occupied West Bank, adding prefabricated houses to a site on Palestinian land southeast of Nablus. According to a statement from the legal organization Al-Baidar on Thursday, this action on Mount Qarqafa between the towns of Aqraba and Jurish represents a deliberate effort to annex new areas and further threaten Palestinian communities.
A Pattern of Expansion and Destruction
The group stated this step "is a continuation of the expansion of illegal settlement outposts on Palestinian land," directly endangering Palestinian property rights. In a related incident, settlers reportedly cut down approximately 150 olive trees belonging to Palestinians east of Al-Khalil (Hebron). The expansion tactic often begins with makeshift huts and fences, followed by access roads, preparing the ground for more permanent structures that, while initially deemed illegal even by Israeli authorities, frequently evolve into full-scale settlements over time.
Settler Violence at Record Levels
This expansion occurs amidst a severe escalation of violence. United Nations figures indicate that attacks by settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank have reached their highest recorded level in the past 20 years. Since Israel's military campaign in Gaza began in October 2023, there has been a parallel surge in detentions, military raids, and violent attacks against Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, creating an atmosphere of heightened fear and instability.

International Law and Regional Implications
Under international law, all Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are considered illegal. Approximately 681,000 settlers now live across these occupied territories, significantly complicating daily life for Palestinians and undermining the viability of a future Palestinian state. Türkiye firmly condemns these illegal settlement activities and the accompanying violence as clear violations of international law, repeatedly calling for an end to the occupation and for the establishment of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
