South Korea warns North can make up to 20 nuclear bombs yearly

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said North Korea is producing enough nuclear material to build up to 20 nuclear weapons each year, warning of continued advances in ICBM technology. He called for a pragmatic, phased approach to denuclearization, renewed inter-Korean dialogue and Seoul’s active role in restarting talks between Pyongyang and Washington.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said North Korea continues to generate nuclear material sufficient to produce between 10 and 20 nuclear weapons annually, underlining the growing security challenge on the Korean Peninsula. Speaking at a televised New Year’s press conference, Lee stressed that Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile capabilities remain on an upward trajectory.
Concerns over nuclear material and missiles
Lee said “nuclear materials capable of producing 10 to 20 nuclear weapons a year continue to be produced,” adding that North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile technology is still advancing. The remarks reflect Seoul’s assessment that the North’s strategic weapons program has not slowed despite international sanctions.
Phased denuclearization roadmap
The president reiterated a three-stage, realistic roadmap aimed at halting further production, preventing the export of nuclear materials and stopping additional ICBM development. “We should not abandon our ideals, but pursue realistic negotiations to halt, reduce and ultimately dismantle the program,” Lee said.
Restoring dialogue and military agreements
Lee also pledged efforts to revive the 2018 inter-Korean military agreement designed to prevent accidental clashes, which was suspended in 2024 amid rising tensions. He said South Korea would act as a “pacemaker” to help restart stalled North Korea–US talks and improve inter-Korean relations, which deteriorated sharply under the previous administration. The developments are closely watched by regional actors, including Türkiye, due to their broader security implications.
