A South Korean national participating in a humanitarian mission to break Gaza's naval blockade has been detained and transferred to an Israeli prison following the Israeli military's interception of aid vessels in international waters. According to civic organizations including the Korea Civil Society in Solidarity with Palestine and Gangjeong Friends, activist Kim Ah-hyun (also known as Haecho) is currently held at Ketziot Prison located in Israel's Negev desert region after being captured during Wednesday's naval operation.

Kim was aboard one of eleven vessels operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition when Israeli naval forces boarded the ships in international waters, seizing control and detaining participants. The civic groups have strongly condemned Israel's treatment of the humanitarian activists, accusing Israeli authorities of categorizing flotilla participants as "terrorists" despite their stated humanitarian objectives. Gangjeong Friends specifically highlighted concerns about detention conditions at Ketziot Prison, describing the facility as "notorious for its harsh and abusive conditions."

The detention has prompted official diplomatic engagement from Seoul, with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung directing authorities Thursday to employ "utmost" diplomatic efforts to secure Kim's safe release. The incident represents the latest international diplomatic challenge arising from Israel's interception of humanitarian flotillas attempting to breach the naval blockade of Gaza. The current convoy departed following last week's Israeli seizure of over 40 boats from the Global Sumud Flotilla, which resulted in the detention of approximately 450 activists, most of whom have since been deported.

Israel has maintained its naval blockade of Gaza for nearly eighteen years, recently intensifying restrictions by closing border crossings and obstructing food and medicine deliveries since March. The tightened siege has exacerbated humanitarian conditions throughout the coastal territory, pushing the population toward famine amid ongoing military operations that have resulted in nearly 67,200 Palestinian fatalities since October 2023, with women and children comprising the majority of casualties and widespread infrastructure destruction rendering the enclave largely uninhabitable.
