Severe flooding across southern Thailand has resulted in 33 fatalities and affected close to a million households. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in Songkhla province and are urging residents in high-risk areas to evacuate immediately.

Catastrophic flooding has struck southern Thailand, claiming 33 lives and impacting nearly one million families across nine provinces. The disaster has prompted a large-scale emergency response, with the Thai government declaring a state of emergency in the heavily affected Songkhla province. This natural catastrophe highlights the vulnerability of Southeast Asia to extreme weather events, a challenge also monitored by disaster management agencies in Türkiye.

Provincial Breakdown and Warnings

According to official reports, Nakhon Si Thammarat province has been hardest hit with nine confirmed deaths, followed by Songkhla with six, and Pattani and Yala provinces with five each. The Flood Crisis Operations Center has issued urgent warnings for residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate when alerted, as meteorological forecasts predict continued heavy to very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods throughout the region.

Widespread Impact and Relocated Events

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reports that more than 980,000 families in provinces including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Phatthalung, Pattani, Narathiwat, Yala, Trang, Satun, and Surat Thani have been affected. The flooding's disruption is so severe that it has forced the relocation of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games events originally scheduled for Songkhla to the capital, Bangkok.

Government's Emergency Measures

In response to the escalating crisis, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has taken decisive action by declaring a formal state of emergency. To streamline the disaster response, the supreme commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces has been appointed to lead and coordinate all emergency operations, underscoring the severity of the situation and the national effort required for rescue and relief.
