Spain accuses Israel of breaching international law over Iran war

Spain has sharply criticised Israel’s conduct in the ongoing conflict with Iran, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accusing the Israeli government of violating international law and warning of broader risks to the global order.
Speaking at a joint appearance in Beijing after meeting Xi Jinping, Sanchez said the current escalation reflects a breakdown in adherence to legal norms governing international relations.
Strong criticism of Israeli actions
Sanchez stated that “international law is today fundamentally being violated by one country,” referring directly to Israel. He reiterated Spain’s position that the conflict—initiated by the United States and Israel—was both a “mistake” and “illegality,” underscoring Madrid’s consistent opposition since the early stages of the crisis.
The remarks mark one of the strongest public criticisms from a European leader regarding the conduct of the war.
Call to restore global norms
The Spanish leader warned that the erosion of international legal principles could undermine global stability. He emphasised the need for a return to foundational rules and institutions that govern state behaviour, arguing that long-term prosperity depends on adherence to these frameworks.
“At a time when the international order is being openly questioned, we must return to its principles,” Sanchez said, stressing Spain’s commitment to defending international law.
Diplomatic context in Beijing
Sanchez’s comments came during an official visit to China, where discussions with Xi focused on geopolitical developments and global stability. The meeting reflects ongoing diplomatic engagement among major and middle powers as tensions linked to the Iran conflict continue to reshape international alignments.
