The White House announced Wednesday that Spain has agreed to cooperate with the US military following tensions over American access to Spanish bases, a day after President Donald Trump threatened to cut off all trade with Madrid. Spain had prohibited US use of its territory for attacks on Iran.

The White House confirmed Wednesday that Spain has reversed course and agreed to cooperate with the US military, just one day after President Donald Trump threatened to cut off all trade with the European ally over access to bases on Spanish territory. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Madrid had clearly heard Trump's message and was now coordinating with American forces.

Threat delivered, response received

"With respect to Spain, I think they heard the president's message yesterday loud and clear, and it's my understanding ... they've agreed to cooperate with the US military and so I know that the US military is coordinating with their counterparts in Spain," Leavitt stated. The announcement resolves a diplomatic confrontation that erupted when Madrid prohibited the US from using bases on its territory to carry out attacks on Iran amid the escalating regional conflict.

Trump's trade ultimatum

On Tuesday, Trump delivered a blunt ultimatum to Spain, telling reporters in the Oval Office as he hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz: "We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain." The threat came after Spanish authorities blocked American access to military facilities on its soil for operations related to the US-Israeli campaign against Iran, which has killed nearly 1,000 people including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Strategic implications

The rapid Spanish reversal underscores the leverage the US wields over allies through trade and security relationships, particularly during active military operations. Spain hosts significant US naval facilities at Rota and air bases at Morón, which have been critical for American operations in the Mediterranean and Middle East. With the Iran conflict expanding and showing no signs of de-escalation, maintaining access to Spanish bases remains strategically vital for US force projection.
