Sri Lanka floods and landslides leave 56 dead with rescue efforts ongoing

Severe floods and landslides have devastated large parts of Sri Lanka over the past 10 days, claiming dozens of lives and displacing tens of thousands. Authorities say more than 43,000 people are suffering the impact of relentless rainfall, while military teams work to reach affected communities under red-alert warnings across several districts.
At least 56 people have lost their lives in Sri Lanka as intense flooding and landslides continue to batter the island nation. The extreme weather, which began on Nov. 17, has left entire neighborhoods inundated and cut off from critical services, according to the country’s Disaster Management Center.
Widespread disruption across multiple districts
Nearly 44,000 residents across 17 districts have been directly affected, while 21 people remain unaccounted for. Roads, homes, and agricultural areas have suffered severe damage as floodwaters continue to rise. Local hospitals are treating 14 injured individuals amid ongoing emergencies.
Military mobilized to support rescue operations
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake directed over 20,000 military personnel to join civilian authorities in evacuation and relief efforts. Search teams are prioritizing high-risk regions where communication and access have been disrupted due to landslides.
Batticaloa hit with record rainfall
Batticaloa district alone received more than 300 millimeters (11.8 inches) of rain in a short span, causing flash flooding and heavy runoff. Meteorologists attribute the current conditions to a persistent low-pressure weather system, bringing repeated bursts of torrential rain and strong winds.
Government issues landslide alerts and safety warnings
Eight districts are under a red-alert landslide warning, with officials urging families in steep and mountainous areas to stay vigilant and ready to evacuate. Schools and businesses in several regions have been temporarily closed to reduce risk.
Authorities say weather patterns may remain unstable in the coming days, as rescue teams race to assist isolated communities and prevent further casualties.
