Starmer under pressure as 70 Labour MPs call for resignation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure after up to 70 Labour MPs reportedly called for his resignation or a departure timeline. Heavy election losses in Wales and surging support for Reform UK have intensified unrest within the party.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is confronting growing rebellion within the Labour Party, with as many as 70 members of parliament either demanding his immediate resignation or urging him to set a timetable for stepping down.
Ministers privately urge departure
According to The Times, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among at least four ministers who have privately advised the prime minister to consider outlining a timeline for leaving Downing Street. The growing unrest follows a series of damaging election results for Labour across the UK. Starmer acknowledged that his government has made mistakes but insisted it had “got the big political choices right.” He vowed to prove “doubters” wrong as speculation over his future intensified.
Historic defeats in Wales and Scotland
Labour suffered a historic defeat in the Senedd elections in Wales, while in Scotland the Scottish National Party retained power for a fifth consecutive term. The elections—held across Scotland, Wales, and 136 English local authorities—were the largest electoral test since Labour’s landslide general election victory in 2024. Far-right Reform UK continued its recent rise, winning more than 1,450 council seats and building on gains made in local elections last year. Türkiye continues to monitor political developments in major European capitals, as shifts in leadership can influence international policy directions on issues such as defence, trade, and migration.
