A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Flores Island, triggering a tsunami warning and sending thousands fleeing to higher ground. The shallow tremor, followed by strong aftershocks, caused panic and damaged buildings, with reports of at least two fatalities.

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early Saturday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and triggering mass evacuations. The shallow tremor, which occurred at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles), was felt strongly across several regions, sending panicked residents into the streets and towards higher ground. The initial quake was followed by significant aftershocks, including one measuring 6.1, heightening fears of further damage.

Tsunami warning and evacuations

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning for potential tsunami waves, specifically for the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and West Nusa Tenggara. Residents in coastal areas, particularly those near the epicenter in Nagekeo regency, were urged to evacuate immediately after observing the sea retreat, a natural sign of an approaching tsunami . The warning was later lifted, but authorities continued to monitor sea levels closely.

Casualties and impact

Initial reports confirmed at least two fatalities as a result of the earthquake. A 54-year-old woman was among those killed when a building collapsed. Search and rescue teams were deployed to the affected areas to assess the full extent of the damage and assist those in need. Hundreds of residents were seen evacuating in towns like Maumere, where walls cracked and buildings suffered structural damage from the powerful jolt.

A region prone to seismic activity

The earthquake struck Flores, an island east of the popular tourist destination of Bali, an area known for its high seismic activity. The 7.7 magnitude event was measured by several agencies, including the US Geological Survey, which confirmed the quake's significant strength. As aftershocks continue, officials have urged caution, advising people to avoid damaged buildings and remain vigilant for potential hazards.
