Sudan's Burhan vows victory over RSF but keeps door open for reconciliation

Sudanese military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has vowed that victory over the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces is imminent while stating that reconciliation remains possible. His comments came during a speech marking Sudan's 70th independence anniversary, as the country remains fractured by a devastating civil war.
Assurances of victory and calls for unity
Speaking in an address cited by the state news agency SUNA on Thursday, Burhan sought to reassure the public: "We reassure our people everywhere that victory is coming and that victory will belong to the Sudanese people." He specifically addressed residents of the war-torn Darfur and Kordofan regions, asserting that success was near and that the conflict had unified national resolve.
Continued openness to national reconciliation
Despite the fighting, Burhan emphasized that "the door to national reconciliation remains open," extending the offer to all who wish to join. He praised political factions that have aligned with the army, framing the struggle as one for national sovereignty against the RSF, which controls most of the western Darfur region.
Stalemate in a war with catastrophic humanitarian toll
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. The army holds the capital Khartoum and most of the country's north, east, and center, while the RSF dominates Darfur. Recent weeks have seen fierce battles in the Kordofan states, displacing tens of thousands more and deepening one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.
