Swedish protesters rally against Israel's Gaza ceasefire violations

Hundreds demonstrated in Stockholm on Saturday, protesting Israel's policies in Gaza and the West Bank. Activists criticized the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, disputing the effectiveness of ceasefire agreements. The rally coincided with a call from over 100 Swedish parliamentarians for government action against settler violence in the occupied territories.
Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets of Stockholm on Saturday to voice strong opposition to Israel's military actions in Gaza and its policies in the occupied West Bank. The protest, which began at Odenplan Square and proceeded toward the Swedish parliament, featured banners and chants calling for a free Palestine, an end to hostilities, and condemning proposed annexation of Palestinian land.
"A Deceptive Ceasefire"
A central theme of the demonstration was the critique of the current situation in Gaza. Swedish activist Malin Akerstrom, argued that the international community is being misled about a ceasefire. "The world is being deceived into believing there is a ceasefire, even as Gaza continues to be bombed and babies are freezing to death," she stated, highlighting the dire winter conditions exacerbating the humanitarian disaster. Many protesters carried signs labeling the situation a genocide.
Parliamentary Pressure Mounts
The public demonstration aligned with political pressure within Sweden. More than 100 members of the Swedish parliament have formally called on their government to take action. In a letter to Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, the lawmakers expressed deep concern over the significant rise in violence by illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank in recent years. They urged the Swedish government to pursue measures to halt these actions, which they say violate international law.
A Broader Call for Action
The event in Stockholm reflects growing international scrutiny of the war. Protesters and politicians alike framed their demands as a necessary response to a failure of both Israeli policy and the international diplomatic response. The rally underscored calls for tangible steps to address both the immediate crisis in Gaza and the longer-term occupation and settlement activities in the West Bank.
