Syrian Army opens Aleppo corridor, urges SDF to surrender

The Syrian military has announced a temporary humanitarian corridor for civilians to flee Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood. The army simultaneously called on SDF fighters to lay down their weapons, offering security guarantees.
The Syrian Army announced Friday the establishment of a temporary humanitarian corridor to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from the embattled Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo. In a statement conveyed by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the Army Operations Command said the corridor would be open between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. local time. The military urged residents to use the designated al-Awarid passage to reach other districts of the city.
Call for SDF to Surrender
In the same announcement, the army extended an offer to members of the YPG/SDF, which it designates as a terrorist organization. The statement called on these fighters to "lay down their weapons," pledging that authorities would "work to secure them." This move appears to be a combined humanitarian and psychological operation aimed at separating civilians from combatants and encouraging defections amid ongoing clashes in the area.
Context of Ongoing Conflict
The corridor announcement follows days of intense fighting in Aleppo, with previous reports from Syrian military sources accusing the SDF of using civilians as human shields in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood. The initiative aligns with the Syrian government's broader efforts to reassert control and implement a March 2025 integration agreement that the SDF has been accused of ignoring. The humanitarian situation in the neighborhood has reportedly deteriorated, with significant civilian displacement already occurring.
