Syrian President Ahmed Shara delivers a speech during the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Belem, Brazil, on November 6, 2025.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has appealed for international investment in renewable energy and sustainable development during his address at COP30 in Brazil. The Syrian leader, making the first appearance by a Syrian president at a UN climate conference since 1995, emphasized his country's commitment to green reconstruction amid environmental challenges.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has used his platform at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil to seek international investment for Syria's renewable energy and sustainable development projects. The Syrian leader's participation marks the first time a Syrian president has attended a United Nations climate conference since the series began nearly three decades ago in 1995.

Addressing Environmental Challenges

During his address to world leaders in Belem, Sharaa outlined the severe environmental difficulties Syria has faced, noting that the country experienced its worst drought in over sixty years. He described climate change impacts as having reached their "peak" in Syria, with conflict and large-scale displacement creating additional strain on already limited natural resources. The president positioned Syria's reconstruction efforts as aligned with global climate objectives.

Call for International Investment

The Syrian leader actively solicited foreign investment, specifically highlighting opportunities in renewable energy and sustainable urban development. "That is why we invite you to invest in Syria — in sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable green cities, and pioneering investment projects that are protected, supported, and guaranteed by the state," Sharaa stated. He reaffirmed Syria's commitment to international climate agreements and pledged to submit updated national contributions in accordance with global standards.

Diplomatic Engagement

The climate summit provided opportunity for significant diplomatic encounters, with Sharaa meeting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, and World Bank President Ajay Banga. The Syrian president symbolically linked the Amazon with Syria's Barada and Euphrates rivers, calling for extended cooperation between nations. Following the Brazil summit, Sharaa is scheduled to travel to Washington for discussions with US President Donald Trump.
