Ten killed, including suspect, in British Columbia school shooting

A shooting in the small town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on Tuesday resulted in ten fatalities, including the suspected gunman, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian broadcaster CBC. The incident, which unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, is now the second-deadliest school shooting in Canadian history.

Victims Found at School and Residence

Police reported that six individuals were found dead inside the school, while one victim died en route to the hospital. Two additional victims were discovered at a residence believed to be connected to the shooting. The suspect was also found deceased inside the school from what authorities described as a "self-inflicted injury." Approximately 25 people were evaluated for injuries at a local medical center following the attack.

Community Lockdown Lifted

A shelter-in-place order covering Tumbler Ridge and surrounding areas was lifted by early evening local time as the immediate threat subsided. The remote town, with a population of around 2,400, is situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 680 kilometers from the U.S. border.

National Grief and Official Response

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed devastation over the shooting, offering prayers and condolences to affected families. In a statement on social media platform X, he acknowledged the "courage and selflessness" of first responders and confirmed coordination with British Columbia Premier David Eby and federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree to support the community. The 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal, which claimed 14 lives, remains Canada's deadliest school shooting.
