The Economist magazine featured Iran on its cover with the headline "Advantage Iran," declaring that after a month of US-Israeli bombardment, Tehran has emerged with strategic advantage over its rivals. The cover depicted a hand wearing an Iranian flag ring squeezing a globe, symbolizing Iran's ability to pressure global markets through its control of the Strait of Hormuz, which has remained effectively closed since the war began.

Analysis of Trump's strategy

The magazine analyzed President Donald Trump's approach to the conflict, noting that his steps have not affected Iran as intended. "President Trump presided over an unusually chaotic week in his misguided war against Iran," the analysis said. "He had recently threatened punitive bombings of Iran's civilian energy infrastructure. Iran did not buckle, markets did react. Then came a U-turn." The analysis noted Trump's claims of backchannel negotiations and the Pentagon's deployment of 82nd Airborne Division troops as signs that escalation remains a possibility.

Iran's strategic position

"Amid this uncertainty, the Iranian regime appears undeterred. Remarkably, it now holds a strategic advantage over its rivals," the magazine concluded. The analysis highlighted that despite weeks of airstrikes that have killed over 1,350 people, Iran has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, stranding approximately 1,900 vessels and disrupting global energy markets.

Tehran's conditions for peace

Iran has rejected a 15-point ceasefire proposal presented by the US, calling it "excessive," and instead laid out five conditions for ending the war, including payment of war reparations and a cessation of hostilities on all fronts. Tehran characterized Washington's negotiation overtures as a "third deception project" aimed at buying time for further military action.

Conflict context

The US and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on Feb. 28, killing over 1,350 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US assets. The Strait of Hormuz closure has pushed oil prices above $116 per barrel and caused a global economic shock.
