Three dead, 50 evacuated in Lyon building fire

A fire in a seven-storey residential building in Decines, a Lyon suburb, has killed three people and forced 50 residents to evacuate. One victim jumped from an upper floor. Prosecutors have opened an investigation, and a criminal cause has not been ruled out.
A deadly blaze tore through an apartment building in southeastern France on Monday, claiming three lives and displacing dozens of residents. According to local broadcaster BFM TV, the fire broke out in the morning in a seven-storey building in Decines, a suburb of Lyon. Firefighters later extinguished the flames, but not before one man reportedly jumped from an upper floor in a desperate attempt to escape.
Casualties and investigation
Fourteen other residents suffered smoke inhalation but were not reported to be in life-threatening condition. A total of 50 people were evacuated from the building. The Lyon prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into possible charges including “damage caused by dangerous means resulting in death, intentional homicide by an organized group, and participation in a criminal association with a view to committing a crime.” Authorities have not ruled out a criminal origin.
Local context
According to BFM TV, the neighbourhood has experienced repeated acts of intimidation linked to drug trafficking in recent weeks, including arson. While the cause of Monday’s fire remains under investigation, the incident has heightened concerns about public safety in the area. For Türkiye, which maintains strong bilateral ties with France, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of building safety standards and cross-border cooperation on fire prevention and emergency response.
