7 people were killed, 2 missing after storm lashed northern, central Philippines, say authorities

Tropical Storm Fengshan has moved away from the Philippines after several days of severe weather that affected more than 130,000 people across the archipelago nation. The storm, known locally as "Ramil," brought torrential rains and powerful winds that caused extensive flooding in northern and central regions before exiting Philippine territory on Monday morning.

Casualties and Missing Persons

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the severe weather event resulted in seven confirmed fatalities, with two individuals still reported missing. The revised official report documented the storm's impact across nine provinces and thirty-five cities and municipalities, highlighting the extensive geographical reach of the damaging weather system.

Widespread Displacement and Shelter Needs

The disaster management agency reported that approximately 37,825 families, representing 133,196 individuals, were affected by the tropical storm. The severe conditions forced 13,710 people from their homes, with 7,511 seeking refuge in 166 designated evacuation centers while another 6,199 individuals found shelter with relatives or in other locations away from the storm's path.

Regional Vulnerability to Tropical Storms

The Philippines experiences frequent tropical cyclones due to its geographical location in the western Pacific Ocean, with an average of twenty typhoons making landfall annually. This recurring pattern of severe weather events necessitates continuous disaster preparedness and response capabilities throughout the island nation, which regularly contends with the destructive potential of such storms during its extended typhoon season.
