Trump claims German chancellor supports nuclear-armed Iran, Merz ‘doesn’t know what he’s talking about’

President Trump alleged that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz thinks it’s acceptable for Iran to have nuclear weapons, adding that Merz “doesn’t know what he’s talking about.” He said a nuclear-armed Tehran would leave the world “hostage.” The attack follows Merz’s criticism of the US and Israel over the prolonged Iran war.
US President Donald Trump launched a sharp verbal attack on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday, claiming that Merz finds it acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons. “The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added that Merz “doesn’t know what he’s talking about” and warned that a nuclear-armed Tehran would leave the world “hostage.” Trump defended his own posture as a move “other nations, or presidents, should have done long ago,” and added: “No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both economically, and otherwise.”
Merz’s earlier criticism
The verbal assault followed remarks by Merz on Monday, in which he doubled down on criticism of the US and Israel over the prolonged war with Iran and vowed that Europeans would step up diplomatic efforts to find a solution. “Regarding Iran, yes, I've become disillusioned,” Merz told a news conference in Berlin, reiterating his view that the US lacks an “exit strategy” and that Americans were “humiliated” by Tehran. Germany did not immediately respond to Trump’s latest allegations.
