Trump comparing himself to Jesus ‘unacceptable’, Latin Church vicar says

Bishop William Shomali, General Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, told Anadolu that Donald Trump’s comparison of himself to Jesus Christ is “unacceptable.” He said emulating Christ should be about humility, service and self‑sacrifice, not domination and marginalisation. The bishop also noted that the Vatican and most US bishops oppose the war on Iran.
US President Donald Trump’s attempt to liken himself to Jesus Christ is “unacceptable,” the General Vicar of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said Monday. Bishop William Shomali told Anadolu that while Christians are called to emulate Christ, “that should be through his humility, spirit of service, and self‑sacrifice, not through a desire for domination, authority, and marginalizing others.” He said the problem is not that Trump tries to emulate Jesus, but that he presents himself as “a superhuman and great figure,” which “is not acceptable and is rejected.”
Violation of Christian Principles
Shomali stressed that Trump’s conduct during the recent war with Iran has violated basic Christian principles, notably “to love your neighbour as yourself.” He also voiced the Vatican’s and the Catholic Church’s opposition to the war, adding that both the pope and most US bishops oppose it. On Sunday, Trump launched a sweeping attack against Pope Leo XIV, calling him “weak on crime” and “foreign policy,” and claiming the Catholic Church only chose him to manage relations with the Trump administration. The US president also shared an AI‑generated photo on Truth Social depicting himself as Jesus.
