A planned second summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest has been put on hold. The delay follows a disagreement over Trump's demand for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine that would freeze the current frontlines, a condition Moscow has resisted.

A anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been postponed indefinitely, stalling diplomatic efforts to address the war in Ukraine. The summit, which was slated to be held in Budapest, Hungary, was delayed following discussions between US and Russian diplomats that failed to resolve a key impasse over the terms of a potential ceasefire.

The Ceasefire Sticking Point

The core of the disagreement lies in the US insistence on an immediate cessation of hostilities that would lock in the existing battlefield positions. "I don't want to have a wasted meeting," President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, explaining his stance. He outlined his demand for both sides to pull back from the frontlines, stating, "you got two countries that are killing each other, two countries are losing five to 7,000 soldiers a week." Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, however, has publicly criticized this demand, suggesting it contradicts understandings reached during the leaders' previous summit in Alaska.

Diplomatic Maneuvers and Sanctions Pressure

The planned meeting in Budapest was announced by Trump after a phone call with Putin in mid-October, with initial plans for their top diplomats to meet this week to finalize details. That preparatory meeting was also canceled. As diplomacy stalls, pressure on Russia is mounting from another direction: the US Senate is preparing a new, robust sanctions package targeting the Kremlin. The legislation has significant bipartisan support and is awaiting a signal from the White House before it is brought to the floor for a vote that is expected to pass swiftly.

An Uncertain Path Forward

President Trump stated he has "not made a determination," without specifying on what particular issue, leaving the next steps unclear. The postponement of the Trump-Putin summit highlights the profound challenges in negotiating an end to the conflict, with fundamental disagreements on the most basic initial step—a ceasefire—blocking progress. The US president is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, underscoring the ongoing coordination with Western allies amid the stalled bilateral talks with Moscow.
