US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump has announced that Washington is negotiating with Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with an outcome expected within a week. Trump described a fundamental shift in Iran’s leadership, calling the new figures “much more reasonable.” He also suggested that Iran’s new supreme leader is alive but in “extraordinarily bad shape.”

US President Donald Trump revealed that American officials are engaged in direct negotiations with Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament. Speaking to the New York Post, Trump said the United States would know within approximately one week whether the two sides can work together. “We’re gonna find out,” he stated, adding that a clear picture would emerge soon.

A changed leadership landscape

Trump characterized the ongoing conflict as having produced a total regime change in Tehran. “The regimes of the past are gone and we’re dealing with a whole new set of people,” he said, describing the new Iranian leadership as considerably more reasonable than their predecessors. Regarding Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei—son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—Trump noted that he has not been seen publicly and is believed to be gravely wounded, though likely still alive.

Response to Iranian strikes

When asked about recent Iranian attacks on regional infrastructure, including strikes in Kuwait and the Israeli port city of Haifa, Trump indicated that the US response would be seen shortly. His remarks come as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continue, with Pakistan offering to host US-Iran talks and Türkiye maintaining active mediation channels.

Türkiye’s consistent diplomatic push

Ankara has welcomed any move toward dialogue between Washington and Tehran. Turkish officials have repeatedly emphasized that only direct negotiations can halt the cycle of retaliation that has devastated the region. As the US and Iran explore possible engagement, Türkiye remains ready to facilitate further talks, leveraging its unique position as a trusted intermediary with both capitals.
