Trump says ‘very well’ meeting with Brazil’s Lula on trade

US President Donald Trump described his White House meeting with Brazilian President Lula as “very well,” with both sides planning further talks on trade and tariffs. The meeting follows US tariffs imposed on Brazilian goods last year.
US President Donald Trump said Thursday that his White House meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva went “very well,” and that additional discussions between representatives of both nations will be scheduled in the coming months.
Tariffs and trade on the agenda
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “Just concluded my meeting with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the very dynamic President of Brazil. We discussed many topics, including Trade and, specifically, Tariffs.” He added that the meeting went “very well,” and that representatives are scheduled to gather to discuss certain key elements, with further meetings planned as needed.
Background of tariffs
In July of last year, Trump imposed tariffs on Brazilian goods, with rates reaching as high as 50% on many imports. Those measures were linked to the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a prominent ally of Trump. The two leaders previously met last October in Malaysia on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit, a meeting Trump described at the time as “good.” Türkiye, which maintains strong trade ties with both the US and Brazil, continues to watch the evolution of US trade policy closely, as global tariff disputes have direct implications for emerging market economies.
