Trump's 2028 revelation: President wants third White House bid despite ban

US President Donald Trump has revealed his desire to be a candidate in the 2028 presidential election during a conversation with journalists on Air Force One. While dismissing a potential legal challenge to term limits, he also hinted at strong future candidates within his administration.
President Donald Trump has stated he would "love to" run for president again in the 2028 election, expressing his enthusiasm during an in-flight press engagement on Air Force One en route to Japan. When questioned about his potential candidacy in the future race, Trump pointed to his strong polling numbers as a key motivator, saying, "I'd love to do that. I have the best results in the polls."
On Term Limits and a Potential Legal Challenge
When pressed by reporters on whether he would mount a legal challenge to the constitutional two-term limit for presidents, Trump indicated he had not yet considered that course of action. The 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution explicitly restricts individuals from being elected to the presidency more than twice, presenting a significant legal and political hurdle for any such attempt.
Praising Potential Successors
The conversation also turned to other individuals who might seek the presidency. Trump noted that his administration was full of "wonderful people" who could be potential candidates. After journalists pressed for specific names, he gestured toward Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was present, stating, "We have wonderful people; I don't have to get into it. One of them is standing right here."
Role of the Vice President
President Trump also took the opportunity to praise Vice President JD Vance, who handles significant domestic and national security files within the administration. However, Trump firmly dismissed the possibility of himself being a vice-presidential candidate on any future ticket, deeming the idea inappropriate. He stated, "Yes, I'm allowed to do that. I think that would be very cute. Yes, I would reject it because it's so cute. I don't think people would like it. It wouldn't be right."
