Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone call with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul to discuss diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing war in the Middle East. The talks underline Ankara’s active role in seeking regional de-escalation.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul held a telephone conversation Thursday to exchange views on efforts to end the escalating conflict in the Middle East, according to diplomatic sources. The call comes as the US-Israeli air offensive on Iran continues to fuel regional instability, with growing civilian casualties and disruption to global energy supplies.

Diplomatic push amid widening war

While details of the discussion remain undisclosed, the two ministers are believed to have addressed the need for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic channels. Türkiye has consistently called for dialogue-based solutions, warning that continued hostilities could engulf neighboring countries. Germany, a key European power with significant influence in transatlantic decision-making, has faced internal debate over its level of support for the US-led campaign.

Türkiye’s growing role as mediator

Ankara has positioned itself as a critical mediator in the crisis, maintaining communication channels with all parties involved, including Iran, Gulf states, and Western allies. Fidan’s outreach to Berlin signals Türkiye’s intent to bridge divides between NATO members and regional actors. The Turkish Defense Ministry reiterated Thursday that “all disputes must be resolved on the basis of international law, through dialogue and diplomacy,” as Ankara continues to push for an end to hostilities that have killed more than 1,340 people since February 28, including Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
