Türkiye and Qatar broker extended Afghanistan-Pakistan ceasefire

Following mediation talks hosted by Türkiye and Qatar, Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to extend a fragile ceasefire. The parties reached a consensus in Istanbul to continue the truce and will establish a monitoring mechanism. A high-level meeting is scheduled for November to finalize implementation details.
A ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan has been extended following successful mediation efforts led by Türkiye and Qatar. Diplomatic talks held in Istanbul from October 25-30 resulted in a consensus to continue the truce initially brokered earlier in October, reinforcing Türkiye's growing role as an international peace mediator.
Strengthening the Truce with a Monitoring Mechanism
According to a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the parties agreed to establish a formal monitoring and verification mechanism. This system is designed to ensure the maintenance of peace along the border and will impose penalties on any side found to be violating the terms of the agreement, adding a crucial layer of accountability.
Pathway to a High-Level Settlement
The Istanbul meetings paved the way for a more decisive high-level meeting scheduled for November 6 in the same city. It is during this upcoming session that additional principles for the ceasefire's implementation are expected to be discussed and finalized, moving the process from a temporary truce toward a more structured arrangement.
International Recognition for Constructive Efforts
Türkiye and Qatar, acting as the key mediators, expressed their appreciation for the constructive contributions made by both Afghanistan and Pakistan throughout the negotiation process. The mediators reaffirmed their readiness to continue supporting all efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the region, underscoring their sustained commitment. The ceasefire was first announced on October 15 after border clashes and had been previously extended pending the outcome of these talks.
