Türkiye says SDF decentralization push threatens Syria's unity

Türkiye has warned that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continue to advocate for decentralization and federalism, undermining Syria's territorial integrity. Ankara stated it is coordinating with Damascus on the principle of "one state, one army" and would support Syrian government initiatives for national unity.
Türkiye's National Defense Ministry stated on Wednesday that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) persist in promoting decentralization and federalism, taking no genuine steps to integrate into Syria's central authority. Ankara warned that this approach poses a direct threat to the country's territorial integrity and stability.
Coordination with Damascus and Counterterrorism Gains
The ministry emphasized it is monitoring the situation in coordination with the Syrian government, adhering to the principle of "one state, one army." A spokesperson affirmed, "If the Syrian government decides to take an initiative for unity and integrity, Türkiye will support it." The briefing also highlighted recent counterterrorism successes, including the surrender of 111 PKK members in 2025 and the destruction of 741 kilometers of terror tunnels in Syrian operation zones.
Border Security and Regional Initiatives
On border security, officials reported apprehending 9,942 individuals attempting illegal crossings in 2025, while preventing 66,794 attempts. The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) seized nearly two tons of narcotics along the southeastern border this year. Regionally, the TSK continues to lead peace efforts, including the upcoming eighth activation of the trilateral Black Sea mine countermeasures task group with Bulgaria and Romania in January 2026.
Criticism of Israel and Defense Modernization
The ministry spokesperson criticized Israel for creating regional instability and condemned the international community's inadequate response to its actions. On defense modernization, the briefing detailed the induction of new domestic systems, including modernized M60T tanks, HİSAR-A air defense systems, and T-70 helicopters. Looking ahead, key projects for 2026 include the Steel Dome air defense system, the Kızılelma and ANKA-3 unmanned combat aircraft, and major naval projects like the TF-2000 destroyer. Efforts also continue to lift US CAATSA sanctions and procure F-35 jets until the national KAAN fighter enters service. This comprehensive strategy underscores Türkiye's commitment to robust national defense and active, stabilizing diplomacy in its region.
