Türkiye’s fish production hits record 1.02 million tons in 2025

Türkiye's fish production reached an all-time high of 1.02 million tons in 2025, with aquaculture contributing approximately 600,000 tons. Fisheries exports also neared $2 billion, marking a significant economic milestone for the sector.
Türkiye achieved a historic milestone in its fisheries sector in 2025, with total fish production reaching a record 1.02 million tons. Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli announced the figure, stating it is the highest production level in the history of the Republic of Türkiye.
Breakdown of Production and Economic Impact
Preliminary ministry data indicates that about 400,000 tons of the total came from capture fisheries (wild catch), while approximately 600,000 tons were produced through aquaculture. Minister Yumakli highlighted the sector's substantial economic contribution, noting that fisheries exports approached $2 billion in 2025. He credited the effective implementation of a quota system under production planning for helping achieve this balance between sustainable use and conservation.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Yumakli acknowledged that climate change, affecting sea temperatures and fish migration patterns, presented challenges throughout the year. However, he thanked fishermen and farmers for adhering to sustainability rules, ensuring the year concluded without major disruptions. Notably, anchovy production surpassed expectations, reaching 245,000 tons. The minister expressed optimism for continued success in 2026, pledging close coordination with the sector to maintain this positive trajectory. This record output underscores the strength and strategic importance of Türkiye's blue economy, aligning with the nation's goals of food security and sustainable resource management.
