Jordanian authorities reported that two individuals were killed during a security operation targeting wanted suspects in the northern Irbid governorate. The raid, conducted by special forces in the Al-Ramtha District on Tuesday evening, resulted in an exchange of fire that left three security personnel injured.
Violent Confrontation and Hostage Situation
According to Jordan's Public Security Directorate, the two suspects—identified as brothers with extremist affiliations—responded to the raid by opening heavy fire on security forces. During the confrontation, the brothers barricaded themselves inside the location and used their mother as a human shield in an attempt to prevent security forces from targeting them. Authorities confirmed the woman was successfully rescued without injury.
Weapons Seized and Official Statements
Following the operation, security forces seized several firearms and substantial quantities of ammunition from the site. The Jordanian government had previously announced that security services were conducting an operation against "outlaws" in the country's northern region. Mohammad Al-Momani, Jordan's Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications, stated on social media platform X that further details would be provided by security authorities once the operation concluded.
Regional Security Context
The operation in Irbid governorate reflects Jordan's ongoing security efforts to combat extremist elements within its borders. The kingdom has maintained vigilant counterterrorism operations, particularly in northern regions near the Syrian border, as part of broader regional security measures to prevent the spread of militant activities.
