UK envoy praises Türkiye's 'critical' role in Syria during summit

British Ambassador to Ankara Jill Morris has recognized Türkiye's "absolutely critical" contribution to developments in Syria during her address at the Bosphorus Summit in Istanbul. The UK envoy paid tribute to Türkiye's leadership role in regional affairs and described the pace of change in Syria away from conflict as "very encouraging," while welcoming Syrian government steps toward political transition.

Syrian Political Transition

Morris emphasized the importance of transparency and inclusion in Syria's political processes to build confidence among the Syrian population. She noted that as steadfast NATO allies positioned at opposite ends of Europe, the United Kingdom and Türkiye are deepening their collaboration to address shared regional challenges amid increasing global conflict and polarization.

Gaza Ceasefire and Reconstruction

Addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Morris characterized the recent conflict as having caused "unfathomable human suffering" but noted the current ceasefire represents "a moment of hope." She acknowledged the leadership of US President Donald Trump and the instrumental roles played by Egypt and Qatar in developing the Gaza peace agreement, while recognizing ongoing challenges despite hostage reunions and increased humanitarian aid delivery.

UK Commitment to Regional Stability

The British envoy stated that the initial ceasefire phase provides Palestinians an opportunity to "begin to build a better future free from conflict." She outlined the UK's continued support through humanitarian assistance, staff deployment to civil-military coordination centers, and partnerships with international communities and private sectors to mobilize reconstruction investments in Gaza.
