UK to deploy military assets to Belgium after drone incursions

The United Kingdom has agreed to deploy military personnel and equipment to Belgium following multiple unauthorized drone incursions into Belgian airspace near critical infrastructure. UK Chief of Defense Staff Air Chief Marshal Richard Knighton confirmed the decision after his Belgian counterpart requested assistance in addressing the security challenges posed by recent drone activities.

Military Assistance Agreement

Knighton disclosed that "the Defence Secretary (John Healey) and I agreed at the end of last week that we would deploy our people, our equipment to Belgium to help them." The British military official emphasized the importance of NATO allies supporting each other during security challenges, noting that UK forces were already beginning their deployment to assist Belgian authorities in identifying and countering the drone threats.

Recent Security Incidents

The decision comes after Brussels Airport temporarily suspended operations Thursday night due to drone sightings in the vicinity. Additional incidents were reported near Liège Airport on Tuesday and Thursday, along with unauthorized drone activity observed near a Belgian military base. Knighton acknowledged that "we don't know – and the Belgians don't yet know – the source of those drones," indicating the mysterious nature of the incursions.

Broader European Context

Several European nations have experienced similar drone incidents in recent months, particularly near airports and military installations. Some European security officials have suggested Russian involvement, characterizing the activities as part of a hybrid warfare campaign connected to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Moscow has consistently denied any responsibility for the drone incursions across European airspace.
