British Defense Secretary John Healey has issued a direct warning to Moscow, confirming that a Russian intelligence vessel, the Yantar, is being monitored just outside UK territorial waters near Scotland. He stated the ship, designed for mapping undersea cables, directed lasers at RAF pilots and emphasized that Britain is prepared for any escalation.

The United Kingdom is closely tracking a Russian intelligence-gathering ship operating near its territorial waters north of Scotland, with Defense Secretary John Healey delivering a firm warning to Moscow. The vessel, identified as the Yantar, has been present in the UK's wider exclusive economic zone for several weeks, prompting a significant military monitoring operation.

Nature of the Threat

According to statements made at Downing Street, the Yantar is a specialized ship built for intelligence collection and for mapping critical undersea infrastructure, such as communication cables. "This is a vessel designed for gathering intelligence and mapping our undersea cables," Healey stated, highlighting the strategic threat such activities pose to national security.

UK Military Response and Incident

In response to the ship's presence, the Royal Navy deployed a frigate and the Royal Air Force scrambled aircraft to continuously monitor its movements. During these surveillance operations, a concerning incident occurred. Healey reported that "the Yantar directed lasers at our pilots," an action he described as "deeply dangerous." This marks the second time this year the same Russian ship has been deployed to UK waters.

Official Warning to Moscow

The Defense Secretary used the opportunity to send an unambiguous message to the Russian leadership. "So my message to Russia and to (President Vladimir) Putin is this: we see you, we know what you're doing, and if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready," he warned. This public declaration underscores the UK's heightened state of alert regarding Russian naval activity in the region.
