Ukraine and Saudi Arabia seal defense pact during Zelenskyy visit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a major defense cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia during his visit to Riyadh. The deal, signed by the two countries’ defense ministries, establishes a framework for future contracts, technological collaboration, and investment, further strengthening Ukraine’s role as a security partner.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed Friday that Kyiv and Riyadh have finalized a significant defense cooperation arrangement during his official visit to the Gulf kingdom. In a statement posted on X, Zelenskyy confirmed that the agreement between Ukraine’s and Saudi Arabia’s defense ministries was signed ahead of his meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He described the accord as “laying the foundation for future contracts, technological cooperation, and investment,” adding that it reinforces Ukraine’s standing as a security contributor on the international stage.

Discussions extend beyond defense

Zelenskyy’s talks with the Saudi crown prince covered a range of issues, including the volatile situation in the Middle East and Gulf region, developments in global fuel markets, and potential avenues for energy collaboration. The Ukrainian president arrived in Saudi Arabia on Thursday for what he described as a series of “important meetings.” Earlier Friday, he met with a group of Ukrainian military experts who have been stationed in the kingdom for the past week to assist in countering Iranian drone activities.

Türkiye’s parallel role as regional mediator

As Ukraine deepens its defense ties with Gulf nations, Türkiye continues to play a distinct and pivotal role as a diplomatic bridge between conflicting parties. Ankara has maintained balanced relations with both Moscow and Kyiv since the outbreak of the war, hosting peace talks and facilitating prisoner exchanges. While Saudi Arabia pursues bilateral defense arrangements, Türkiye’s emphasis remains on dialogue and de‑escalation—a position that has earned it credibility across the region and reinforced its standing as an indispensable actor in efforts to resolve the wider conflicts affecting the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
