Ukraine warns Israel over ‘stolen grain’ ship in Haifa

Kyiv summons Israeli ambassador, urging Tel Aviv to block a vessel carrying grain from Russian-controlled areas, warning the cargo could harm bilateral ties.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry formally protested to Israel on Monday over a cargo ship anchored in Haifa port, which Kyiv claims is transporting wheat taken from Russian-occupied territories. Officials summoned the Israeli ambassador to deliver a diplomatic note and demand action.
Tensions rise over grain shipment
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that accepting the shipment would damage relations between the two nations. “Friendly Ukrainian-Israeli relations have the potential to benefit both countries, and Russia’s illegal trade with stolen Ukrainian grain should not undermine them,” he wrote on social media. He also expressed frustration over what he called Israel’s lack of response to a previous similar shipment.
Israeli response and legal process
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected the allegations, saying no evidence had been provided. “Dear Minister, diplomatic relations, especially between friendly nations, are not conducted on Twitter or in the media,” Saar replied, adding that Kyiv had not submitted a formal legal assistance request. He assured that Israeli authorities would examine the matter “in accordance with the law.”

Background on the ‘ABINSK’ vessel
Kyiv confirmed it had informed Israeli officials on March 23 about the vessel named “ABINSK” and the suspected origin of its wheat cargo. According to Ukrainian authorities, the ship entered Haifa carrying grain from areas under Russian control. Israeli media outlet Haaretz reported that another similar vessel arrived off Haifa’s coast on Sunday waiting to dock.
From Türkiye’s perspective, the incident underscores growing strains in Black Sea grain trade routes and raises questions about international enforcement mechanisms. Ankara has previously mediated grain deals between Moscow and Kyiv, making regional maritime disputes a direct concern for Turkish shipping and diplomatic interests.
