UN approves Gaza resolution, sparking Israeli political divide

A UN Security Council resolution for Gaza has been met with a split reaction in Israel. While Prime Minister Netanyahu's government welcomed the US-drafted plan, right-wing opposition leader Avigdor Lieberman condemned it as a catastrophic failure that handcuffs the Israeli military and represents a loss of national sovereignty.
A recent United Nations Security Council resolution concerning Gaza has exposed a deep political rift within Israel. The US-drafted resolution, which passed with 13 votes in favor and abstentions from Russia and China, has been praised by the Israeli government but fiercely criticized by the opposition as a surrender of security control.
Government Backs the Plan
The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement applauding the resolution and US leadership. The government views the move as an endorsement of a broader peace vision and a potential catalyst for further regional integration and the expansion of the Abraham Accords, which normalized ties between Israel and several Arab nations.
Fierce Opposition Criticism
In stark contrast, Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party, launched a scathing attack on the government's stance. He labeled the resolution's acceptance a "mismanagement" and a dangerous concession. "We have lost control over the country," Lieberman stated, arguing that the introduction of an international force amounts to handcuffing the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and represents a severe erosion of sovereignty.

The Resolution's Stipulations
The adopted resolution paves the way for a new governing structure in Gaza, including the formation of a Board of Peace and the authorization of an International Stabilization Force. This force is tasked with overseeing governance, security, and reconstruction efforts in the war-torn enclave until the end of 2027, aiming to establish a post-war order without Hamas.
