Aftermath of the clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The UN peacekeeping mission has condemned a series of attacks by the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that killed at least 89 civilians in one week. The violence included an assault on a church-run health center where patients were burned alive, with UN officials warning these acts may constitute war crimes.

The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has strongly condemned a wave of deadly attacks by rebel fighters in the eastern North Kivu province that resulted in the deaths of at least 89 civilians over a one-week period. The violence, attributed to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) armed group, targeted multiple communities in Lubero Territory between November 13 and 19.

Systematic Attacks on Civilians and Medical Facilities

According to the UN Organization Stabilization Mission (MONUSCO), the assaults included a particularly brutal attack on a Catholic church-run health center in Byambwe, where 17 civilians, including women in the maternity ward, were killed. The rebels set fire to four patient wards and looted medical supplies while also burning homes and destroying property in communities already experiencing severe humanitarian vulnerability.

UN Officials Decry 'Truly Horrific' Situation

UN officials described the situation as "truly horrific," with spokesman Stephane Dujarric emphasizing that attacks on civilians and medical facilities may amount to war crimes under international humanitarian law. Bruno Lemarquis, the acting head of MONUSCO, extended condolences to bereaved families and reaffirmed the mission's commitment to supporting Congolese authorities in protecting civilians and combating impunity for such violations.

Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis and Security Challenges

The security situation in North Kivu province has remained dire since October, with continued ADF activity forcing school closures, disrupting healthcare, and displacing thousands. Humanitarian operations face significant risks, as highlighted by an October incident where unidentified gunmen set fire to a truck carrying aid for displaced populations. The ADF, which pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2019, continues to pose a serious threat despite joint military operations by Congolese and Ugandan armies.
