UN expert alleges EU complicity in Palestine crisis, warns of genocide

Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, has issued a stark condemnation of the European Union, accusing it and its member states of abetting the destruction of Palestine. In a powerful address in Brussels, she warned of a potential genocide and criticized the bloc's ongoing ties with Israel.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has leveled severe criticism against the European Union, asserting that its policies and those of its member states are actively facilitating the destruction of Palestine. Speaking to reporters at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday, Albanese accused the bloc of failing its international legal obligations regarding Gaza and the wider Palestinian situation.
A Call for Suspended Agreements
Albanese pinpointed the continued trade and military cooperation between the EU and Israel as a central issue, expressing grave concern that the suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement has been blocked by nations including Germany and Italy. She highlighted ongoing arms transfers and Israel's participation in programs like Horizon Europe as evidence that the EU is not a passive observer but an active participant in the crisis. "In my view, the situation is so dire that it is beyond comment," she stated.
Unprecedented Violence and Western Bank Crisis
The UN expert described the situation in the West Bank as an "ethnic cleansing" of almost unprecedented violence over the past eight decades. She noted a troubling connection to Europe, revealing that many violent Israeli settlers are citizens of European nations and that numerous Europeans have served in the Israeli military. This context, she argued, makes discussions about a two-state solution meaningless while the Palestinian population is "disappearing" and their land is occupied or destroyed.

Complicity and Collapse of Values
Albanese delivered a chilling warning, saying, "We are facing a new genocide, and we are at risk of being complicit in it." She elaborated that this complicity not only leads to the devastation of Palestine but also undermines the foundational values of the European Union itself. She also dismissed the US President's plan for Gaza as non-compliant with international law, citing the International Court of Justice's ruling on the illegality of Israel's occupation, and reiterated the urgent need to suspend the EU-Israel military cooperation agreement.
