UN reports 61 million tons of debris blanket Gaza after two-year war

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees revealed that Israeli military operations have left over 61 million tons of rubble across Gaza, with entire neighborhoods erased. The announcement follows an ICJ ruling supporting UNRWA's humanitarian operations in the territory.
The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported Thursday that more than 61 million tons of debris now cover the Gaza Strip following two years of Israeli military operations. "Entire neighborhoods have been erased, and families search the ruins for water, for shelter," the agency stated on social media platform X, highlighting the massive reconstruction challenge facing the coastal enclave.
Humanitarian Operations Continue
Despite Israeli restrictions and a parliamentary vote last October to block UNRWA operations, the agency emphasized its continued humanitarian mission in Gaza. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini confirmed the organization has secured sufficient medical supplies, essential goods, and food stocks to sustain Gaza's population for the coming three months, though distribution remains challenging amid the widespread destruction.
International Court Backs UN Agency
The UNRWA announcement came one day after the International Court of Justice rejected Israeli allegations against the agency. The world court found that Israel "has not substantiated its claims that a significant part of UNRWA employees are members of Hamas" or participated in the October 2023 attacks. The ICJ further ruled that Israel remains obligated under the Geneva Convention to facilitate humanitarian relief operations conducted by UNRWA and other impartial organizations.
Conflict Toll and Current Situation
According to Gaza health authorities, Israeli military operations since October 2023 have resulted in over 68,000 fatalities and 170,000 injuries. The current ceasefire, based on a US-proposed phased plan that took effect on October 10, has temporarily halted the fighting while humanitarian agencies confront the enormous task of clearing rubble and providing basic services amid the devastation.
