The UN Security Council passed a resolution Wednesday condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council nations and Jordan, with 13 votes in favor and Russia and China abstaining. The Bahrain-drafted resolution, co-sponsored by 135 countries, denounced Tehran's strikes as a "breach of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security."

The United Nations Security Council approved a resolution Wednesday strongly condemning Iran's military attacks against Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan, marking a significant diplomatic victory for the affected nations. The resolution, presented by Bahrain and co-sponsored by 135 countries, passed with 13 votes in favor while Russia and China abstained from the vote.

Resolution defends territorial integrity

The adopted text expresses "strong support for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and political independence" of the GCC states and Jordan, reaffirming the council's commitment to protecting member states from external aggression. The resolution specifically condemns the "egregious attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran against" Gulf countries and Jordan, emphasizing that such actions "constitute a breach of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security."

Civilian infrastructure targeted

The Security Council also condemned the targeting of civilian infrastructure in the Iranian strikes, noting that attacks "resulted in civilian casualties and damage of civilian buildings." The language reflects growing international concern about the humanitarian impact of Iran's retaliatory campaign, which has expanded beyond military targets to affect civilian populations across the region.

International consensus on display

Bahrain's UN envoy Jamal Fares Alrowaiei welcomed the resolution's adoption, stating "It proved that the Council is committed to maintaining international peace and security." He noted the overwhelming support from 135 co-sponsoring nations, saying "This overwhelming support by the international community reflects a collective awareness of the danger of the unjust Iranian attack against our countries." The strong international consensus stands in contrast to the divided votes often seen at the Security Council, signaling broad global concern about Iran's regional aggression as the conflict with US-Israeli forces continues to expand.
